ISO 55001 Asset Management

Current edition: ISO 55001:2024

The asset management standard for organisations whose performance depends on physical assets: plants, networks, fleets and infrastructure. It links asset decisions to organisational objectives across the whole life cycle.

2027Transition deadline

ISO 55001:2014 certificates must transition by 31 July 2027

ISO 55001:2024 was published in July 2024. Changes include clearer life cycle management in operational planning, asset management decision-making criteria, stronger requirements for data and information, and preventive action replaced by predictive action.

What the standard covers

Requirements, clause by clause

ISO 55001 connects organisational objectives to asset management objectives, plans and day-to-day decisions.

4

Context

Issues, stakeholders, scope, the asset management system and the strategic asset management plan.

5

Leadership

Commitment, asset management policy, roles.

6

Planning

Risks and opportunities, objectives, decision-making criteria, asset management plans.

7

Support

Resources, competence, awareness, communication, data and information, documented information.

8

Operation

Operational planning and control across the life cycle, management of change, outsourcing.

9

Performance evaluation

Monitoring, internal audit, management review.

10

Improvement

Nonconformity, corrective action, predictive action, continual improvement.

Clauses 4 to 10 follow the harmonized structure shared with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, so the systems integrate cleanly.

Decisions that balance acquisition, operation and renewal.

Regulatory confidence

A recognised framework for regulators of utilities and infrastructure.

Reliable asset data

Data and information managed as an asset in its own right.

Integrates with EHS

Who certifies

Independent certification, chosen to fit your market

Your ISO 55001 certificate is issued by an independent certification body accredited by UKAS, DAkkS or an equivalent national accreditation body. AEC prepares you for that audit; the certification decision is theirs.

CB-neutral

We are not tied to one certification body and help you select one that your stakeholders recognise.

Audit-ready

Mock certification audit and closed corrective actions before Stage 1 and Stage 2.

No guarantees

We prepare you thoroughly and never promise an outcome only an independent auditor can decide.

Questions

ISO 55001 FAQ

Does AEC issue the ISO 55001 certificate?

No. Certificates are issued by independent certification bodies accredited by UKAS, DAkkS or an equivalent national accreditation body. AEC prepares your organisation for that audit.

We hold ISO 55001:2014. What now?

Transition to ISO 55001:2024 before 31 July 2027. We run a gap review focused on decision-making criteria, data and information, life cycle planning and predictive action.

Does ISO 55001 require a maintenance system?

It requires asset management plans and operational control across the life cycle. A computerised maintenance management system often supports that, but the standard does not require a specific tool.

How does ISO 55001 differ from ISO 41001?

ISO 55001 manages physical assets for value across their life cycle. ISO 41001 manages facility services that support people and core activities. Many organisations with large estates use both.
