OPITO (The Oil and Gas Academy) is a not for profit owned organisation, which works with employers and employee groups to set and monitor training and competence standards for the global offshore oil and gas industry.

• OPITO works in partnership with approved training providers to ensure that the delivery of key safety and emergency training meet industry standards.
• OPITO maintains a database of personnel training details which can be accessed worldwide by employers.
• OPITO training and certification is recognised in the majority of regions where the oil and gas industry operates, helping avoid duplicate training.
• OPITO works in partnership with employers to develop & approve systems designed to prove the competence of their employees

OPITO role includes :

• Setting up a workgroup“ to decide the exact content of a standard, its purpose, learning outcomes, facilities requirements, staffing levels and equipment

• Drafting the standard “ which undergoes extensive consultation to ensure it meets the agreed requirements of the industry
• Being custodian of the standard - training providers are invited to apply for approval to deliver the standards
• Providing regular reviews “ to make sure the contents are comprehensive and applicable
